The Observer Newspapers were founded in 1976 by Peggy D. Vetter as a free publication. Before The Observer started publication, the news was delivered to Herndon residents by Town of Herndon trash collectors. As the population of Herndon grew, so did The Observer. It was delivered by 90 carriers to all Town residents, and to other Herndon areas outside the town.

In 1990 Mrs. Vetter sold the newspaper to Tom and Betsy Grien. A Sterling edition was started that year. In 1993 the Griens started The Reston Observer as a monthly publication which became weekly in 1998. The Eastern Loudoun, Herndon and Reston Observers are now mailed to more than 58,000 homes.

The mission of The Observers is to deliver accurate and timely community news to readers and to provide a forum for public discourse.
