The crown jewel is the Reston Town Center. Reston is laterally trisected into three large thousand acre plus areas. Baron Cameron Avenue and the Dulles Toll Road are the two arterials that divide Reston into three segments, North Reston, the Lake Anne section and the South Reston area.
The Reston Town Center, about 70% complete, is still in the development stage. Thankfully not an enclosed suburban mall, it is truly an urban downtown. The core area is a mix of office and retail with restaurants and a Hyatt Hotel anchoring the East Market Street the town centers main street. When the plans were first publicly aired, a commonly heard comment was that, "it looks like a block K or C street from downtown Washington, DC". The town center is the retail and employment heart of Reston, having the tallest office building in Northern Virginia and yet maintaining a pedestrian friendly atmosphere for retail shoppers, office workers and residents of the town center. Eventually it will have up to 1100 dwelling units as part of its very urban mix of land uses. It is nationally and internationally recognized having a constant stream of visitors looking for ways to replicate the concept elsewhere.
