The Volunteer Center of Fairfax

Just for Youth
No matter what your interest, this agency will help you find the nonprofit organization of your choice and instruct you on how to get involved to make a difference. Have an idea for starting your own group youth project? They can help there, too. With their complete Directory of Youth Service Opportunities, the Volunteer Center even has a list of awards and grants available for youth.
Volunteer opportunities can be found in the following categories: Animals and the Environment; Arts, History, and Humanities; the Challenged and Impaired; Children and Youth at Risk; Domestic Violence; Education and Advocacy; Health; Hungry, Homeless, and Housing; Parks and Recreation; Public Safety and Justice; Seniors; and Social Services.

Reston Interfaith

Housing and Community Services � Cedar Ridge
Mentors � Volunteer to mentor children 8 years old and up after school and on Saturdays. In a program associated with the YMCA, it�s a terrific way to get involved. A one-year commitment is required.
Coaches � They provide the kids and the gear, now all they need is a coach! Develop youth sports activities, including basketball, soccer, football, cheerleading, volleyball, baseball, chess, and step classes.
Maintenance � Help with lawn care and in the general upkeep of the low and moderate-income housing project.  Weekend and group opportunities are available.
Minimum age to volunteer is 16. Or, 6th grade and higher with a parent or guardian.

Social Services
Herndon Elementary Enrichment Program � Help academically at-risk 3rd, 4th and 5th graders throughout the school year. A commitment of one night per week (M, T, W, or Th) from 7-8:30 p.m. is required.
Food Drives � Help the emergency food bank by holding a food drive either at your organization or at a local grocery store. Kids' groups welcome.
Front Desk � Volunteer to help in the Social Services office. Answer phones, greet clients. and assist with filing and copying.
Minimum age to volunteer is 16. Or 6th grade and higher with a parent or guardian.

Embry Rucker Community Shelter
Become involved as a receptionist, a computer trainer, or even in the area of childcare while parents attend weekly job meetings. There is also an ongoing wish list of items needed by the shelter. You can drop donations by individually, or organize a donation drive!
Minimum age to volunteer is 16. Or 6th grade and higher with a parent or guardian.

Fairfax County, Department of Community & Recreation Services

Project Success
Empowering youth to become responsible and make a difference, Project Success is an inclusive service-learning program, which engages youth with and without disabilities in community service.
Some activities include: Collecting food and clothing for the needy; collecting items and making emergency bags for children in foster care; collecting and repairing used bicycles for children in need; cooking and serving meals at homeless shelters; hosting camping trips for adults with disabilities; making repairs and renovations at a homeless shelter; mentoring at risk youth; planting gardens certified by the National Wildlife Federation; and refurbishing a state institution for people with disabilities.

Reston Association

Youth Advisory Committee
Make a difference in your local government and advise the Reston Association Board of Directors on how to enhance RA-sponsored youth recreation and leisure programs and activities. By advocating on behalf of and for Reston youth, you can encourage your classmates to participate in community meetings, public hearings, and other events such as youth-run volunteer efforts.

RCC uses youth volunteers in many of their programs.

The American Cancer Society of Northern Virginia

How can you join the fight against cancer? There are many opportunities, events, and programs available to youth including: Fundraising efforts; supporting legislation on a local and national level; and helping with activities in your area, including involvement in the annual Relay for Life. The Fairfax County Democratic Committee
Ever dreamed of making a difference in your government, either on the local or national level? There are many ways to become involved with the FCDC, and there are always ways to help.
Activities include: Computer processing; door-to-door campaigning; fundraising; general office work; Get-Out-the-Vote campaigns; help with mailings; posting campaign signs; press work; research; rides to polls on Election Day; and work at polling places on Election Day.

The Fairfax County Republican Committee
Ever dreamed of making a difference in your government, either on the local or national level? There are numerous ways that you can help the Republican Party and its candidates and throughout the year.
Activities include: Helping with literature drops; making phone calls as part of a phone bank; organizing letters of support; posting yard signs for fellow supporters; sending e-mails as part of an e-mail network; working the polls as a poll watcher or greeter.
